UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

Specialist Program in Statistics – Quantitative Finance Stream
September 2024 – Present

I am currently in my second year at the University of Toronto Scarborough, pursuing a Specialist Program in Statistics with a focus on the Quantitative Finance Stream.

The University of Toronto consistently ranks as Canada’s top university and is globally recognized for excellence in applied mathematics and statistics. Being here allows me to learn from world-class faculty, engage with cutting-edge research, and develop the analytical skills necessary for a career at the intersection of finance and data science.

Academic Achievements

In my first year, I earned a place on the University of Toronto Scarborough Dean’s List, awarded to students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Why Statistics and Quantitative Finance?

My love for mathematics goes beyond computation—I see it as both an art form and a powerful tool for understanding the world. The elegance of mathematical structures, the satisfaction of solving complex problems, and the ability to apply statistical thinking to real-world challenges all draw me to this field.

The Quantitative Finance stream combines my passion for mathematics with practical applications in financial modeling, risk analysis, and data-driven decision making. I’m particularly interested in how mathematical models can be used to reform institutions, optimize systems, and address issues like corporate accountability and regulatory compliance.

Courses and Learning

I genuinely love all my courses. Each class offers new perspectives and challenges, from theoretical foundations in probability and statistical inference to practical applications in programming and data analysis. The interdisciplinary nature of the program allows me to explore connections between mathematics, economics, computer science, and finance.

Looking Forward

My academic journey at UofT is preparing me for a career where I can apply quantitative analysis to create meaningful change. Whether that’s developing models to improve corporate compliance, using data science to optimize systems, or applying statistical methods to address complex societal challenges, I want my work to make a difference.

The foundation I’m building here—in statistical theory, programming, financial modeling, and analytical thinking—will serve me throughout my career. But beyond the technical skills, UofT is teaching me to think critically, question assumptions, and approach problems with both rigor and creativity.

POINT GREY SECONDARY SCHOOL (MINI PROGRAM)

September 2019 – June 2024

Before university, I had the privilege of attending Point Grey Secondary School’s Mini Program, a specialized academic program for motivated learners. The Mini community fostered my love of learning and provided an environment where my intellectual curiosity could blossom.

Academic Achievements

  • Top Scholar Award 2022-2023 – Awarded for achieving the highest academic standing in Grade 11
  • Principal’s List with Distinction (2019-2024) – Recognized for maintaining exceptional grades throughout high school
  • Advanced Placement Courses – AP Calculus and AP Psychology (2023)
  • Final Transcript Average: 96.8% | Grade 11 Average: 98.25% | GPA: 4.33

Literary Recognition

  • 1st Place, Grade 10 Poetry Contest (2022) – Point Grey Secondary School
  • Recognition of Excellence in Scholarship (2021-2022)

French Language

My study of French allowed me to explore another dimension of Canadian culture and develop proficiency in my third language (after English and Russian, and alongside Japanese).

Concours d’Art Oratoire 2019 – Provincial Competition

  • 3rd Place, British Columbia Provincial Competition
  • Delivered a speech on human rights (“Les Droits Humains”), discussing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, historical violations, and courageous individuals who fought for justice including Viola Desmond, Nelson Mandela, and Malala Yousafzai.

Concours Virtuel Canada 2020

  • 2nd Place – Virtual competition during the COVID-19 pandemic

Burnaby Words Writing Contest – “Toute Blanche” I was honored to win the Burnaby Words writing contest with my French poem “Toute Blanche” (All White), inspired by my wonderful Grade 6 teacher, Mme Cassap-Hanson. I was invited to recite my poem at the Michael J. Fox Theatre—a memorable experience that affirmed my love for creative writing and the French language.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

  • Silver Award (2023)
  • Bronze Award (2021)

This program challenged me to develop skills in physical recreation, volunteer service, skill development, and adventurous journeys. Completing both levels taught me perseverance, self-reliance, and the importance of setting and achieving long-term goals.

Why Point Grey Mini Mattered

Point Grey Mini prepared me not just for university, but for life. It taught me that learning is joyful, that community matters, and that with dedication and support, seemingly impossible goals become achievable.
